The "Bridge of Thirty-Three Arches" over the Zayandeh River, where Isfahanis still meet in the evenings.

A bridge that is also a promenade

Shah Abbas’s general Allahverdi Khan paid for the bridge, which connects the Chaharbagh avenue to the Armenian quarter of New Julfa on the other side of the Zayandeh River. It has two levels of arcades. On the lower level, people walk between the piers beside the water, and on the upper level there are covered walkways running along both sides of the roadway.

The evening walk

When the river is full, the arches fill with water. At night the bridge is lit, and people gather under the arches to sit, talk and sing. In the evenings tea houses and singers fill the lower arcade, and the bridge is one of the most beloved places in Isfahan. It is only a short walk from Naqsh-e Jahan Square.
