A trading city under one roof
Tabriz sat on the Silk Road, and for centuries its bazaar was one of the great trading centres between Asia and Europe. Today it is a network of connected covered streets, domed halls and caravanserai courtyards, built mainly in brick. UNESCO lists it as a World Heritage Site, one of the finest examples of a traditional Middle Eastern market.
Inside
The bazaar is organised by trade, with a hall for carpets, another for gold, others for leather, spices, shoes and fabric. The domed timchehs, such as the Mozaffariyeh, were designed to let in light and air while keeping out the heat and cold of Tabriz’s harsh climate. In winter it is warm, in summer it is cool, and in every season it is busy.
