The old summer quarter
Before Tehran grew into a city of millions, Shemiran was a cluster of villages in the foothills where families came to escape the summer heat. Tajrish was its centre, and its bazaar grew up around the shrine of Imamzadeh Saleh, whose tiled dome and courtyard still sit beside the market.
A walk through the bazaar
Under the vaulted roof, stalls overflow with pomegranates, quinces and persimmons in autumn, fresh herbs for sabzi khordan, barrels of torshi pickles, dried limes, saffron, barberries and mountains of nuts. In the weeks before Yalda and Nowruz it is one of the busiest places in the city, as families shop for the holiday table.
